13 tonnes of Walkers reject Crisps cause factory fire

Fire fighters in County Durham dealt with a blaze involving 13 tonnes of crisps this morning.
The blaze in a crisp storage shed at a farm just of the A19 at Castle Eden, was reported to County Durham and Darlington Fire and Rescue Service at 8.05am.
Two crews from Peterlee tackled the blaze.
The crisps were rejects from the nearby Walkers Crisps plant which were destined to be turned into pig feed, firefighter Mick Henderson said.

‘It was easy in the early days’, explained head of R & D, Mitch Rutland, ‘Things like Cheese n Onion and Salt n Vinegar could be easily replicated with chemicals. Beef just needed a dollop of Bovril and Horse extract…anyway the least said about that…’

World's fave snack food loving bride has wedding dress made from Crisps bags

A teaching assistant with a penchant for crisps has saved a packet on her wedding dress after a colleague made one from wrappers of her favourite snack.
Jane Gettings, who is tying the knot this weekend, can get through three of four bags a day and is known for her fondness for the savoury treat.
The 47-year-old learning support assistant was today (Thursday, March 20) given a surprise wedding party at Harelaw School at Harelaw, near Stanley, County Durham, where she has worked for eight years.
Staff had asked Consett based snack maker Phileas Fogg for empty packets and art teacher Louise Oliver fashioned 75 of them into a wedding dress, complete with train.
Ms Gettings said: “It is amazing. I cried when I first saw it. I have been wearing it. It is quite comfortable but a bit hot.
“I am not wearing it for the actual ceremony, but I will wear it for a bit on the night time.”

Irish Crisps manufacturer Keogh's venture into the UK market

The Keogh family has announced that they are officially launching their range of hand cooked crisps in Northern Ireland. The family, who have been growing delicious Irish potatoes for over 200 years - and now hand cook Ireland’s finest crisps on their farm, will market their range of flavours in Northern Ireland.
“It is not a decision we take very lightly,” advises Tom, the eldest brother of the current generation of Keogh’s: “Recently we have made some big decisions about our crisp business – from providing gluten free products to adding new flavours to our range. We literally hand cook small batches of crisps on our farm in fresh sunflower oil on a daily basis so entering a new market is a huge step for us. That said – we are so proud of our product we want to make it available all over Ireland.”

Ocean's Halo are the latest new kid on the healthy snacks block

Until last year, Robert Mock sold financial derivatives at Bank of America Merrill Lynch. Today, he sells something completely different: seaweed chips.
The crispy snacks, which he developed with three other fathers of young children, have been flying off the shelves since Whole Foods and other stores picked them up in January. The start-up, known as Ocean’s Halo, has now attracted prominent backers, including Jerry Yang, a co-founder of Yahoo.
Mr. Yang is participating in a $2 million financing round for Ocean’s Halo that is expected to close this week. Robert F. Sharpe Jr., a former ConAgra executive, is leading the investment round and has joined the company as its chairman.
