If you look at an American address you will see almost every word abbreviated. Rd, for Road and NY for New York - Indeed, Saratoga itself was shortened from Soroetogoland, among other Native American variations. America loves an abbreviation.
As the snack is actually a Fried Potato Slice we would like to believe that had George et al, thought a little longer about a name they would have abbreviated it to Fried Po-Lice.
Anyway, we digress. Given that the Potato Chip was still available to American English because Thomas Jefferson had renamed the Potato Chip as something completely different, a Potato Chip is what it became.
If however, French Fries had been known as what they were already called in Europe, Fried Po-Lice may have been considered.
The fact that one of the fastest growing fast food options in America is the British style Fish ‘n’ Chips is another story altogether.
And so, also considered for naming purposes at that time, or indeed, any time, would have surely been – Potato Crisp.
Fried Police should not be confused with Fried Police - We do not advocate the frying of policemen.
