Eat Smart NaturalsIn 1909, Harry Warehime founded the Hanover Pretzel Company, which went on to become the Hanover Foods Corporation. In 1923, Helen and William Snyder founded a separate pretzel bakery and distributor.
The companies joined together in the early 1960s, when Hanover purchased Snyder's and renamed the company Snyder's of Hanover. In 1963, the Bechtel Pretzel Company, founded by Bill and Helen Bechtel in 1947, was purchased and incorporated into Snyder's Bakery. Bill developed the original recipe for the Sourdough Hard Pretzel that is still enjoyed by consumers today. After entering most of the other snack markets during the 1960s and 1970s, Snyder's eventually returned to its historical reference of pretzels and potato chips. The Snyder's of Hanover flagship Hanover pretzel bakery was built originally as a distribution center in the 1980s with tortilla and potato chip production added later. Today, the Hanover plant is over 400,000 square feet in size and includes product processing, packaging, and warehousing, as well as a large research and development laboratory. In 1981, Hanover spun off Snyder's, which became an independent company. In December 2007, Snyder's of Hanover acquired Jays Foods of Chicago, Illinois, after they declared bankruptcy, and added to its line of potato chips with an established and respected brand. In addition to this, Krunchers! Kettle Chips, O-Ke-Doke popcorn were added to the Snyder's portfolio in late 2007 upon the acquisition of Chicago based Jays Foods and the former Wyandot, Select Snacks production plant in Jeffersonville, Indiana, that was renamed Krunchers! |
