Mrs Conn carefully selected the best chipping potatoes, the purest vegetable shortening and salt, and created potato chips that have set the standard for good tasting chips for over seventy years. It is a lot different to when the enterprising businesswoman delivered her popular potato chips to her customers in a market basket. Although, even today, the chips company recognize more than ever that their continued success must be built upon giving that same personal touch. Conn’s Potato Chips continues to set the standard for freshness, as well as taste and texture, from Central and South Eastern Ohio to West Virginia. “Striving to make the finest quality product”, the company concentrates on its four business areas: Sales of potato chips and other snack foods to major food store chains and convenience stores, Contract manufacturing, Private label branding, and The Conn’s Potato Chip line. Current owners, Montie Hunter and Tom George, Sr., know their company is poised for tremendous growth in the 21st century and beyond. When Conn’s out-grew two smaller facilities in Zanesville and Lancaster, Ohio respectively, the owners invested in the future of Conn’s with the construction of a new 100,000 square foot facility and new state of the art equipment in Zanesville. At their modern facility, Conn’s still prepares it products with the same care and quality ingredients that have made their potato chips a favorite for generations. Conn’s looks forward to meeting the needs of its customers well into the next generation. |
Conn's Regular Potato Chips
The dated packaging was arguably matched by the flavour. Eating these chips was like being transported back ito a ime before people learned the meaning of saturated fat or worried about calories and salt content of their foodstuffs. The cooking oil brought out the flavour of the potato. They were not nearly as tasteless as many regular unseasoned chips, and far better than some. (11) Conn's Salt & Vinegar Potato Chips
A Nose Plunge Test revealed a tart vinegar aroma that almost erupted from the bag when it was opened. The chips are cooked in soybean oil which may be why there was a somewhat light and fresh taste to them. They were quite salty, but the stand out feature was an overpowering vinegar aspect. They were also quite greasy, and the distinct impression was formed that if you had been brought up with these, no other chips would compare favourably at any time in the future. (10) Conn's Wavy Style Potato Chips
I am of the view that the UK definition of standard, original or unseasoned chips, should refer to all non-seasoned chips - Plain. However, these are not quite plain in flavour. The soybean oil the chips are cooked in provides a different to the somewhat standard taste. The warm potato flavour is brought to the surface of these oily chips. If you were brought up eating Conn's, it is likely, other chips will not compare favourably. (12) |
