National Potato Chip Day - March 14th
Admittedly it’s all a bit transparent. And yes, there does seem to be a ‘Day’ for everything for the marketing guys to have an annual boost, but National Potato Chip Day is here to stay, and we are here to celebrate.
March 14th is National Potato Chip Day, and as March 13th is National Coconut Torte Day and March 15th is National Pears Helene Day, you get the impression that there is a certain amount of desperation on behalf of the food and drinks industry. If a Trade Association asks for one, there will be an elected official willing to grant it.
No-one actually knows how it came about, or why. Indeed, it seems every dog literally has its day, week or month, in America – National Salad Week takes place in the fourth week of July, for the spoilsports.
We do have a suspicion that the trend or the value placed upon National Days may at least in part have a link to the success of Chase’s Calendar of Events. This list features around 750 pages of notable birthdays, community events and holidays. If someone develops an idea for a National Day and submits the form at the back of the book, it will be considered for inclusion.
All that unnecessary criticism aside, National Potato Chip Day is indeed a day to celebrate the world’s favourite snack food.
It gives an opportunity for the smaller independents to grab some free local publicity. It always makes the news or media on a slow news day. And it is all about the delight that is the Potato Chip.
