SLABS crisps owner Beege Bourne-Robinson says; “Our SLABS crisps are truly unique. We wanted to create something special for crisp lovers, a new artisan, craft crisp with real bite and taste like no other. You’ll notice our packs include a window and that’s because we’re proud of our big, bad crisps. We also like to show off that SLABS don’t break like the average crisp so you won’t find the same smashed crumbs at the bottom of the pack.” Try a pack, you won’t go back! Slabs Chunky Chips Thick Cut Potato Chips Pate Ardennes
Super thickly sliced and firm and crunchy. These crisps looked unique and tasted unique - Certainly for the British market anyway. They included Ardennes seasoning, whatever that is. There was a slightly sweet, meaty flavouring that featured a touch of salt and pepper. Thoroughly enjoyable but only loosely related to a recognisable pate. (18) Slabs Chunky Chips Thick Cut Roast Beef
As with all Slabs crisps, these were extraordinarily thickly cut. Too firm to be wafer like, but hard and firm enough to be commanding solidly built crisps. Included within the bag were among the largest crisps I have come across. The flavour was also striking. There was an underlying potato flavouring, which was hardly surprising considering the thickness. The main taste was not the beef stock most familiar with this variety, but an almost herby beef that could easily be likened to warm and tasty Sunday roast beef. (23*) Slabs Chunky Chips Thick Cut Potato Chips Steak & Chips
These snacks featured a unique and original cut. They were thickly sliced narrow chips, sort of like the familiar and ubiquitous chipsticks, but flattened. There was a well-blended potato and beef stock flavouring that veered towards a warming beefy drink on a winter’s afternoon. The nutrition label numbers were high, but fortunately, half a pack was more than enough. (19) |
Slabs Salt & Malt Vinegar Crisps Review
A Nose Plunge Test revealed a mild malt vinegar bouquet. This was echoed in the flavour but in the extreme - They were particularly vinegary in flavour. There did not appear to be a balance of salt, but towards the end of each crisp's short life, there was a residual salty flavouring. (20) Slabs Mature Cheddar & Onion Crisps
The thicker the crisps, the more there is to infuse with a full load of seasoning. These crisps, perhaps understandably, featured a very strong flavour. The balance worked well, but as I neared the end of the bag there was an overwhelming onion taste. Very impressive stuff, but also very much a case of less is more. (20) Slabs Slightly Sea Salted Crisps
It is important to remember that the flavour written on the bag says, “Sprinkled with Sea Salt.” If rated purely against sea salt flavour crisps these would fall short. However, the flavour description was spot on. They were potatoey and slightly salty. The only criticism would be that for this flavour to work flawlessly the potatoes need to be desperately tasty and of the appropriate variety. Crisps often accompany sandwiches to make a good lunch. I would say these were impressive enough to be the lunch, which you could add a sandwich to if you wanted. (21) Slabs Mature Sweet Chilli Potato Crisps
If not the thickest and most giant chips on the international market, these were certainly thickest and largest I have come across for some time. They were exactly as described on the packet – Slabs. There were so thickly cut there was way bends, gnarls or oil blisters could take control. The potato taste was evident in equal proportion to a rather salty sweet experience. I am pleased to say they did not include the word ‘Thai’ before the Sweet Chilli, because there was a unique and original, slightly tangy sweetness. (21) Slabs Mature Egg & Chips Potato Crisps
(Best Novelty Flavour 2021) There was a salty potato aroma when the bag was opened. The crisps, were, as is always the case with Slabs, giant and thick. Superbly meaty and firm slabs of potato. The crunch was magnificent, but what of the all-important flavour. The Chips part was the underlying potato, which was very clever. The partner, and it was a partner in equal measure, was egg. Simple and effective, they tasted like egg and chips. (23*) |
