Wegmans was founded as the Rochester Fruit and Vegetable Company in 1916, by John & Walter Wegman. The company are still privately owned by the family, who are on their third generation of ownership of a company that has a $6billion turnover each year and staff of 43,000.
The company headquarters are still in the Rochester environs and they currently have 81 stores in the states of New York, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Maryland, Massachusetts and Virginia. If you do not live in these states you may still be familiar with them via their regular appearances in the TV sit-com The Office.
Wegmans has appeared on Fortune's annual "100 Best Companies to Work For" list since its inception in 1998, and has ranked among the top ten for eight consecutive years. The Food Network recognized the company with its award for Best Grocery Store in 2007, and Consumer Reports ranked it as the top large US grocery chain in 2012. Wegmans consistently features in the largest 80 retailers in the United States.
In 2008, Wegmans received great praise from the American Lung Association of New York State, when it withdrew all of its tobacco products. Of far more interest to us at Chips & Crisps however, was the year of 1979, when the chain began branding its own products. This has been developed over the years. They currently have a massive range of snack foods, including Potato Chips.
