The Wonderful World of Chips & Crisps is not just about our favorite edible marvel. As they have been commercially sold for over 160 years, it is perhaps unsurprising that a market has developed around the world they have existed within.
We selected a random day in September 2013, and took a peak at the world's largest auction site to see what sort of ephemera and collectables had emerged over time, to interest collectors and other people that enjoyed Chips & Crisps as much as we do.

Collectors Cards
US $15,000 This is not a Potato Chips collectable as such. There is an incredible market for Sports Collectors Cards in the US. This basketball card effectively crosses over from another area of collecting into the Chips & Crisps arena. It will always be worth more to a basketball collector. |
Interestingly, on the same day, this card, from the same series was available for just $2,1000. It doesn't say why this is considered less valuable.

Potato Chips Specific Cards

The success of Pogs during the 1990s saw many companies attempt to cash in on collectable cards series. This collection of Twisted Oddbods Hot Twist Cards, was released by Australian Chips company Smith's in 2001. There was one card in each pack. You know the sort of trick; a couple are much harder to find, thus creating a children's playground currency.

This is an area of collectables that has its own market, but is also an active sub-section of a couple of other areas of collecting. The fact that it appears under both 'Advertising' and 'Food' as sub-categories suggests that those, at the very least, are areas for collection enthusiasts. As Potato Chips were kept and / or sold in these tins right up until the 1970s (some still sell them in tins to maintain traditions, like Charles Chips), would suggest it is an area of growth in the Collectables market. A large collection could be an investment.

US $250 Although this Salesman's Sampler from the 1960s would fit right in with a vintage advertising collector that specialised in food and drink, it could also easily feature in similarly a specialist Chips & Crisps collector's portfolio of weird and wonderful oddities. |

Company Materials: Vehicle Decal

As with the above item, this is from the same company and could arguably feature in an advertising collection. It is an extra large 40 inch x 22 inch full color decal for the use on delivery trucks. It is obviously far more colorful than this when this side is stuck to the vehicle!

A Granny Goose employee's tie clip saying 'Safe Driving 6 Years'. It's hard to say when we last saw a delivery driver wearing a tie, so it can't be new!

GB £38 This is an antique early 1930s shop counter box. It would have been supplied by the company to shops to put their freshly made Crisps in. |

On the day we tested, this was attracting a fair amount of interest. It had seven watchers. The Auction Lot is a classic for knowledgeable eBay buyers. The metal box is a counter top display case. You drop the Chips in the box and scoop them out from a flap at the bottom. However, the real interest would be with the 'added extras' as it were. The seller does not advertise the item as a collector - his photo is very poor with all sorts of distracting things going on in the background. He does not mention how many bags are also supplied with the display case. You can be assured that those that know what they are doing will use eBay's zoom facility to count up how many bags are visible. It is also likely that the seller would have received some emails asking how many there are. Yes, Potato Chips and Crisps bags are also collectable. You can read more on the next pages...
