With most of the world’s population concentrated in Asia, it is hardly surprising that there are so many Potato Chips and Crisps manufacturers.
As Lays alone are the biggest company internationally, there range of flavors is a fair representation of what is available under a variety of different brands in the region.
Garlic Soft Shelled Crab is a Hong Kong favourite, but the range in mainland China, as would be expected, is large. Along with the classic American flavors China has four popular region specific Lays Chips - Cucumber, Kiwi, Blueberry (Yes, Kiwi, and yes, Blueberry), Cherry Tomato, and Lime. There is also an “Intense and Stimulating” range that features Numb & Spicy Hot Pot, and Hot & Sour Fish Soup.
Most spectacularly there is Pepsi-Cola Chicken Flavor. An ingenious way of promoting a stable-mate brand to compete with Coca Cola (pictured above).
Chinese Potato Chips company PanPan distribute to over 60 countries – flavors include, Original, Barbecue, Cheese, Onion & Sour Cream, Salt & Vinegar, Tomato, and Hot & Spicy, and are sold in cardboard tubes.
In Indonesia and Malaysia you will find Fiesta Barbecue, Salmon Teriyaki, Classic Salty, Nori Seaweed and Grilled Chicken Paprika.
Piattos Potato Chips are available in Cheese, Sour Cream & Onion, Nacho Pizza, Roadhouse Barbecue, and Roast Beef flavors and are mainly distributed in the Philippines.
Vietnamese variations include, Original, Brazilian Barbecue, Beijing Roasted Duck, Manhattan Steak, Nori and Mornay Shrimp.
Lays market Salmon Teriyaki in Japan, but the biggest brand is Calbee, whose popular Chips include Salty, Aonori (Seaweed), Takoyaki, Wasabi, Shichimi Togarashi, and a variety of Soy Sauce based offerings.
Along with a range of imports and equally awkward translations, Plain and Sweet Potato are popular in South Korea.
Heading West from this area, Southern Asia’s Lays Chips are ridged and the most popular flavour throughout India, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka and Pakistan is Magic Masala. It has proven so popular that it is also now sold in North America.
Other popular flavours in India include, American Style Cream & Onion, Spanish Tomato Tango and Salted.
Thailand has some interesting flavours in addition to the classic Sour Cream & Onion, Cheese & Onion and Mexican Barbecue – Spicy Chili Squid, Seafood & Mayonnaise and Japanese Nori Seaweed, complementing the range on offer. Not to mention Thai Chilli Paste and Tom Yum.
