Judging by some of the latest designs from smaller companies, it appears that Lay's are allowed to design for the whole Chips & Crisps industry. As seen with so many, there is a giant logo, a photographic image of a few Chips, and the flavoring or seasoning - In this case, a pot of white creamy stuff and a badly cut piece of Cheddar cheese. The advantage Lay's have over their rivals is of course the most recognisable brand on the market. Even their overseas companies have the same logo, but with their brand name on the red banner. Lay's could actually have a plain, flavor color coded bag with the name of the flavor and their logo, and sell no fewer bags of Chips. However, this is far from innovative packaging. It is actually as basic as it can be while still remaining modern and evocative. Fortunately, not all smaller companies take Lay's lead. It is therefore to them, that we have to look for exciting and interesting bag designs.
The hardened oil within the potato slices, helped provide a snappy, crispy bite. A few eaten at once also echo that noisy munch, but they quickly melted and turned pulpy.
Chips with the very best texture will almost always require Kettle Cooking. With regular machine cooking you get an even texture with small oil bubbles rather than characterful raging infernos. Neither do you get rugged, curly and folded Chips. Instead they will be plain and mostly flat Chips. Having said that, these Chips were mostly whole, which is rare for such thin Chips. And they had a bright orange seasoning powder that mixed with grease to provide a Fore-Thumb Test result of really quite messy fingers.
It often seems that Sour Cream flavoring is added to dampen down or add a creamy flavor to a naturally strong taste. This is a fairly familiar Chip flavor to US manufacturers, so as a standard bearer for the industry you would expect Lay's to get this right. Indeed, they should set a standard that others can follow or attempt to better. Each Chip flavor will no doubt have its own business plan, so Lay's will provide a mass appeal Chip without stand-out flavors. While they have succeeded with that aim here, these were still full of flavor, medium strength Cheesy Chips.
